AI Coding Agents Compared (October 2026): Codex, Claude Code, Cursor, Factory, Muse Code

Editor, terminal, cloud agent or chat: the coding agents worth knowing after the GPT-6, Claude 5.5 and Muse Wonder launches, and how to get each.

Every new model launch in September and October 2026 came with a coding agent attached. The agent decides how the model touches your code, so choose the agent first and the model second.

The main agents

  • Codex (OpenAI): included with ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Edu; runs GPT-6.1 Sol and GPT-6 Astra, with an Ultrafast Sol on the way.
  • Claude Code (Anthropic): included with Claude Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise; runs Opus, Sonnet and Haiku 5.5, with a fast mode for Opus.
  • Cursor: an editor with agents across OpenAI, Claude and Gemini models; Pro+ and Ultra add more usage and include Grok Bot.
  • Factory Droids: autonomous agents that take a ticket to a pull request, from the terminal, IDE or Slack.
  • Warp: a terminal with built-in agents and model choice.
  • Muse Code (Meta): Meta's coding agent, the only place to use Muse Wonder Full.
  • Grok Bot (xAI): not a coding tool first, but can drive a Cursor cloud agent as part of a workflow.

Frequently asked questions

Which coding agent is best?

The one that fits where you work. The model behind it matters less than whether it can run your tests and see your whole repo.

Can I use Claude models in Cursor?
