Hermes Agent vs OpenClaw: Open-Source Personal AI Agents Compared

Both are free, self-hosted and chat-driven. Hermes centres on a learning loop and cloud backends; OpenClaw on full control of your own machine.

Hermes Agent (from Nous Research) and OpenClaw are the two best-known open-source personal agents. Both are free, both run on hardware you control, and both are designed to be talked to from the chat apps you already use. The difference is in what they optimise for.

Hermes Agent

  • MIT-licensed, built by Nous Research.
  • A built-in learning loop: it writes skills from experience, improves them while using them, keeps an agent-curated memory and searches its own past conversations.
  • One gateway process serves Telegram, Discord, Slack, WhatsApp, Signal, email and a terminal UI.
  • Runs locally or on seven terminal backends, including Docker, SSH, Modal, Daytona and Vercel Sandbox, so it can keep working on a cloud VM while you chat from your phone.
  • Any model: Nous Portal, OpenRouter, OpenAI or your own endpoint, switched with one command.

OpenClaw

  • Open source and runs on your own Mac, Windows or Linux machine.
  • Full system access: it browses the web, fills forms, reads and writes files and runs shell commands.
  • Chat from WhatsApp, Telegram, Discord, Slack, Signal, iMessage and more than twenty other channels.
  • Persistent memory and a large library of community skills.

Which to choose

Pick Hermes if you want an agent that improves its own skills and lives on a server or sandbox. Pick OpenClaw if you want an assistant with full access to your own computer and the widest choice of chat channels. Both are free software; what you pay for is the model.

Where to host it

An agent works best on a machine that never sleeps. The Hostinger 3-in-1 bundle ($69.99 for a year) includes, as printed on delivery, AI automation apps for OpenClaw, Hermes Agent and n8n with Telegram and WhatsApp integration, alongside web hosting and email marketing.

Paying for the model

Both agents need a model behind them. The Claude API $100 credit ($10.99, 30 days) or a Codex token pack works with any agent that accepts a custom OpenAI- or Anthropic-style endpoint. Give an agent with system access only the permissions you are comfortable with.
