LinkedIn Premium New User vs Existing Account: Pick the Right Unit

Whether your profile has used Premium before decides which LinkedIn unit works. How to tell, and what happens if you pick the wrong one.

LinkedIn treats a profile that has never had a Premium product differently from one that has. PerkShelf splits its LinkedIn units the same way, so the code or instructions match what LinkedIn will accept.

New-user units

A new-user unit is for a profile that has not used that specific Premium product. A profile that never had Premium Career can take a new-user Career unit, even if it once had a different product.

Existing-account units

An existing-account unit is for a profile that already had that Premium product, for example a past Career subscription or trial.

How to check your profile

  1. Sign in to LinkedIn on the profile you will use.
  2. Open Settings, then Subscriptions and payments, and look at your Premium history.
  3. If you see that product listed, active or past, choose the existing-account unit.

If you are unsure, check before you pay. Sales are final after delivery, and a unit redeemed on the wrong type of profile can fail.

After delivery

Open the delivered code, login or instructions and finish setup on that same profile only. Some LinkedIn units take a few hours to arrive. Career units are listed for two and three months; Business for two months; Sales Navigator for two months (Core) or one month (Advanced).

Frequently asked questions

Does a free Premium trial count as having used Premium?

It usually does for that product. If your profile had a trial of Career, treat it as an existing Career account.

Can I use the unit on a different LinkedIn profile later?

Finish setup on the profile you intend to keep. Units are applied once.
