Why Vendors Ask for a Card When the Coupon Makes It $0 (and Using a VCC)

A $0 total with a card field is normal for software coupons. What the card is for, when a virtual card works, and how to stop renewal at the end of the term.

You paste a coupon, the total drops to $0.00, and the vendor still asks for a card. That is how most software checkouts work, not a sign the coupon failed.

Why the card is there

  • The vendor wants a payment method for renewal after the coupon term
  • It is used for usage beyond what the plan includes, on metered tools like Railway or Replit
  • It is a fraud and identity check

PerkShelf never sees or stores this card. The card is between you and the vendor.

Can I use a virtual card (VCC)?

Many vendors accept a virtual or prepaid card. Listings that need a card say "card or VCC at checkout, $0 due". Some vendors decline certain prepaid cards; if one is declined, try a regular debit or credit card.

Which listings need no card

Upgrade links such as Google AI Pro 18 months and Super Duolingo, and Waking Up's coupon, redeem without a card. Ready accounts need no card from you.

Avoiding a charge at the end

After you redeem, open the vendor's billing page and turn off auto-renew or remove the card. A few vendors only allow that once the plan is active. See what happens when a term ends.

Frequently asked questions

Will I be charged anything today?

Not by the vendor if the coupon brings the total to $0. A small authorization hold may appear and drop off, depending on your bank.

Does PerkShelf charge my card?

No. You pay PerkShelf from your wallet, which you top up with crypto or Wise.
